How many immigration agents remain in Minnesota?

How many federal immigration agents remain in Minnesota after the reported drawdown of Operation Metro Surge? Fewer than 1,000, MPR News reports. “According to court filings this week, that’s down from more than 4,000 combined U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and other personnel at the peak of the surge. But it’s still hundreds more than the typical federal footprint in the state.”

“The number of red flag law cases in Minnesota is spiking, with almost double the amount of Emergency Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) filed in its second year as law compared to its first in 2024,” according to KSTP. In red flag cases, a court order can temporarily prohibit a person from purchasing or possessing a firearm when they are at risk of hurting themselves or others. In 2024, there were 138 cases; in 2025, 314; and as of Feb. 2 of this year, there have been 50 cases.

Charges against three Minnesotans who have been accused of assaulting federal law enforcement officers have been dropped, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. “The defendants were initially accused of serious crimes. But when asked for evidence, the government dropped their cases.”

Aliya Rahman, who was a guest of Rep. Ilhan Omar at the State of the Union address Tuesday, was arrested by Capitol police during the speech, The Guardian reports. “Omar had invited Aliya Rahman, a U.S. citizen and Minneapolis resident who in January was removed from her car and dragged by immigration agents in the city as part of the Trump administration’s increased efforts to arrest and deport alleged undocumented immigrants. . … During [President] Donald Trump’s speech, Rahman ‘started demonstrating,’ which violated rules for the event, according to the Capitol police. ‘The guest was told to sit down, but refused to obey our lawful orders,’ the police said in a statement. ‘It is illegal to disrupt the Congress and demonstrate in the congressional buildings.’”
