Minnesota Vikings’ wild-card playoff game against Los Angeles Rams is still due to be played at SoFi Stadium in California but a contingency plan is in place due to multiple ongoing wildfires around LA.

If the back-up plan has to go ahead, Monday night’s game will be held at the Arizona Cardinals’ home field, State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

There are at least five wildfires raging in Los Angeles, fuelled by strong winds up to 100mph, with five people killed and 130,000 told to evacuate their homes.

“The NFL’s priority is the safety of the Los Angeles community,” a statement by the NFL read.

“We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the first responders. Our hearts are with Los Angeles and everyone affected by the fires.

“We continue to prepare to play the Vikings-Rams game as scheduled Monday night at SoFi Stadium. As with all games, there are contingency plans in the event a change in location is needed. In this instance, the game would be played on Monday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, if necessary.

“We will continue to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with public officials, both clubs and the NFLPA.”

The Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers train in areas that are not at risk of wildfires but both teams are monitoring the air quality and the potential impact on their workouts.

The Chargers changed their practice schedule on Wednesday to minimise their players’ outdoor time in coastal El Segundo, while the Rams do not resume practice until Thursday.

The Chargers are on the road on Saturday against the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Chargers announced the organisation will be providing $200,000 (£162,840) in targeted funding to help those affected by the fires.
