Mega Millions jackpot hits $1 billion ahead of Christmas Eve drawing

Someone might be looking at a ho-ho-whole lot of green on Christmas this year — and it won’t be the Grinch.

The Mega Millions jackpot hit $1 billion ahead of the drawing Tuesday night, according to the lottery’s website. Tuesday’s winning numbers were 11, 14, 38, 45, 46 and a Mega Ball of 3.

The drawing took place at 11 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve, meaning some lucky winner could have an extra special Christmas Day. No winner was immediately announced Tuesday night.

A winner who picks a lump sum option would receive less than half of that amount, though $448.8 million is still certain to fill up quite a few stockings.

If someone does have a Mega Millions jackpot ticket, it would be the largest prize ever won in December.

Some of the largest wins in Mega Millions history have occurred in the last few years. The largest prize was awarded last year to a single winner from Florida, whose ticket cashed in on a 1.6 billion jackpot.
