Rams QB Matthew Stafford set to return to team next season

He’s back.

The Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford have agreed to a restructured contract to ensure the quarterback remains with the franchise for the 2025 NFL season, according to multiple reports.

The team confirmed the news that Stafford would return on social media Friday. It comes just days after the Rams reportedly allowed Stafford and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, to speak with other teams about the quarterback’s potential trade value. Stafford, 37, threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season while leading the Rams to the NFC West title. Los Angeles was eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round of the postseason.

He had two years left on a four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed in March 2022 after leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Stafford was acquired by the Rams in January 2021 in one of the biggest trades in NFL history. He was sent to Los Angeles by the Detroit Lions in return for quarterback Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick. Both sides benefited from the move, as the Rams won the league title the following year while the Lions rebuilt and became a contender.

Friday’s news could have an effect on the offseason’s quarterback market. Teams, including the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, were said to have an interest in Stafford. Now, they may turn to other veterans, including future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.
