Aston Villa have completed the signing of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth a total of just over £20m.

Villa have paid an initial £21m but the deal could be worth £27.7m including performance-related add-ons.

Malen has scored five goals across 20 games in all competitions this season for Dortmund, netting in their last game, a 3-1 Bundesliga win at Wolfsburg.

The former Arsenal academy player has found the back of the net a total of 39 times in 131 appearances for Dortmund in three-and-a-half years with the German giants.

The Dutchman joined Dortmund from PSV Eindhoven in July 2021 for a reported £26m, replacing Jadon Sancho who made a move to Manchester United earlier that summer.

Malen spent two years at Arsenal’s academy before being sold to PSV in the summer of 2017.

Villa’s pursuit of Malen pays off

Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett:

“It has been one they have been pursuing for a long time.

“We know that Villa have had a little bit of a downturn in recent weeks, but they wanted Malen, they have been pursuing him for some time, and they wanted to get that to happen.”
