Daryl Jacob is retiring from the saddle with zero regrets after bowing out in the “perfect way” following a 31st and final Grade One victory on Saturday.

The 41-year-old, who had been plagued by injuries in recent months, announced he was calling time on a 25-year career after steering Impaire Et Passe to success in the Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick.

It was fitting that Jacob would finish in the double green colours of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, who have retained his services for the last 11 years.

“It was the perfect way to end my career,” Jacob told Sky Sports Racing. “Everyone knew this was going to be my last year but I really wanted to be back from injury in time for Christmas.

“I don’t think I could have bettered that ride on Impaire Et Passe – a Grade One winner for Simon and Isaac. That’s the one thing I wanted this year.

“To go back to Leopardstown, where I’ve had so many great days, just felt right. I wanted to go out on my terms and do it my way.”

Jacob’s career includes triumphs on the very biggest stages, including the 2012 Grand National with Neptune Collonges, as well as numerous wins aboard the likes of Bristol De Mai and Sceau Royal.

Asked for the best horse he rode, Jacob said: “I’ve had so many great days so it’s hard to pick out one but for a CV the Grand National is right up there.

“L’Ami Serge winning the French Champion Hurdle was a very difficult thing to do and Bristol De Mai winning a second Betfair Chase when he beat Might Bite and Native River was a huge moment.

“I’ve had 31 Grade One winners, won the Irish Hennessy, the English Hennessy on Diamond Harry, Reve De Sivola winning the Long Walk Hurdle, Sceau Royal winning 15 races for me, the wonderful Top Notch. I’ve been very lucky.

“I never thought I’d achieve what I have. I can honestly say I was never the most natural of jockeys, as everyone knows I’m quite tall, but one thing I’ve done is put my heart and soul into it.

“I’ve emptied the tank. I’ve absolutely no regrets, I’ve given everything to the game.

“When you work hard and put your mind to it, I’m pretty convinced you can achieve anything you want.”
