Charlie Kirk has been shot at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
The conservative political activist was about 20 minutes into a presentation witnesses heard gunfire from a nearby building, UVU spokesperson Eleanor Treanor told NBC News.
Kirk, a co-founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, was the only person shot in the incident and authorities do not have a suspect in custody, according to Treanor.
“This is an ongoing situation,” Turning Point USA’s public relations manager Aubrey Laitsch said in a statement to the outlet. “We can confirm that Charlie Kirk has been shot. He is in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time.”
Videos circulating on social media showed Kirk, 31, standing under a tent while speaking to the crowd. After a shot rang out, he physically recoiled and slumping down in his seat.
In the wake of the shooting, President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
