Simu Liu Reveals Personal Role Taylor Swift Played in His Proposal to Allison Hsu

Class is in session with Professor Simu Liu.

The Marvel star gave fans a lesson on how to correctly pronounce his name, explaining he’s found that the correct Mandarin Chinese pronunciation of “Liu” can be “very difficult for most people to say.”

“I go by ‘Lee-You,’” Simu shared in a Feb. 25 Instagram video, “which is not that hard.”

And while the Kim’s Convenience alum chose that pronunciation, he’s also known some Lius who prefer to go by “Loo.”

“I feel like a lot of Lius grew up in non-Asian environments, and they went by ‘Loo’ for simplicity sake,” the 36-year-old said, “because that’s even easier to say and it’s better than nothing, right?”

However, Simu—who was born in Harbin, China, and raised in Ontario, Canada—pointed out that saying the last name like “Loo” is actually closer to the Chinese last name “Lu.”

“So, Lu and Liu are two different Chinese last names, in case you care,” he continued, “in case you want to make an effort and get it right.”
