Aaron Rodgers: Four-time MVP quarterback expected to part ways with New York Jets after two years | NFL News

Aaron Rodgers appears set to part ways with the New York Jets after two disappointing seasons.

According to widespread reports, including from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets have decided to split with the 41-year-old, four-time MVP-winning quarterback after just two campaigns.

Receiver Davante Adams may also be headed for pastures new.

Rodgers joined the Jets in 2023 after 18 years with the Green Bay Packers but his first campaign was ended by an Achilles injury sustained four plays into his regular-season debut.

He started all 17 games in 2024 but they finished 5-12 as the Jets failed to end their 14-year playoff drought.

Speaking on the Inside The Huddle podcast, Neil Reynolds and Jeff Reinebold discuss Aaron Rodgers’ difficult period since moving to the New York Jets.

Rodgers, the fifth player in NFL history to throw 500 touchdown passes in the regular season, has one year of non-guaranteed money left on his contract with the Jets. He would count $23.5m against the salary cap.

If Rodgers is cut or retires, the Jets could absorb a $49m dead money charge next season unless they designate him a post-June 1 cut and can spread out that charge over two years.

Rodgers had said towards the end of the Jets’ season he was undecided on his future and wanted to take “a break mentally to kind of refresh and put my feet in the sand, and see where I’m at after that”.

In the 2024 season, Rodgers completed 63 per cent of his passes for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions

The Jets recently hired general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn, and owner Woody Johnson said at their introductory news conference that the new regime would have the final say on the decision regarding Rodgers.

The Jets currently also have veteran Tyrod Taylor and youngster Jordan Travis, who spent his entire rookie season on the non-football injury list, on the roster. But New York has the No 7 overall pick in the draft in April and could pursue a quarterback then.
