Emiliano Grillo’s slam-dunk hole-in-one on the iconic 16th sparked wild scenes at the PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open, where Thomas Detry carved out a two-stroke lead in round two.

Grillo landed a 155-yard ace on one of golf’s most raucous holes as his ball rolled around the cup a few times before finally dropping.

The Argentinian ran around the tee box to celebrate with his caddie and playing partners Rafael Campos and Seamus Power.

The fans went typically wild, too, hurling beer and other drinks onto the tee and green after witnessing the first ace on the hole since the 2022 edition, when Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz achieved the feat.

Highlights from the second day of the WM Phoenix Open, where Thomas Detry leads by two shots

Grillo’s hole-in-one came amid a two-under 69, taking him to the same number for the tournament and just inside the cut line.

Leader Detry came close to acing 16, too, landing his ball to within two feet before making birdie.

That was one of eight gains on a seven-under day for the Belgian, who reeled off three in a row from the ninth and closed with two more birdies to reach 12 under for the event.

Alex Smalley and Michael Kim are joint second on 10 under with Tom Kim, Jordan Spieth – who eagled 13 and 15 – and Christiaan Bezuidenhout a stroke further back.

Justin Thomas is among a five-strong group on eight under, one ahead of world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot a blemish-free five-under 66 in Arizona on Friday.

Scheffler returned to action at last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am – an event won by Rory McIlroy – for the first time since he injured his hand preparing Christmas dinner.
