When it comes to cleansing, O’Connor advises using mild, soap-free cleansers that gently remove dirt without stripping hydration.

“Avoid harsh ingredients like AHAs and BHAs if your skin is already dry—they can further deplete moisture and irritate the skin barrier,” she says.

Dr. Spearman also suggests looking for skincare products with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, niacinamide, and squalane to calm inflammation.

And don’t skimp on moisturizer! “Opt for a rich, hydrating formula with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin to help restore the skin barrier and lock in moisture,” she recommends.

For an extra hydration boost, O’Connor suggests adding an occlusive product to seal in moisture.

“Occlusives form a protective barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. Apply them over your creams to maximize hydration,” she explains. The best occlusives include petrolatum, mineral oil, olive oil, and argan oil.

However, she cautions that those with acne-prone or oily skin may want to avoid occlusives, as they can trigger breakouts. And don’t forget sunscreen!

“Many people skip SPF in the winter, but UV rays still penetrate the skin—even more so if there’s snow reflecting sunlight,” Dr. Spearman adds. “A gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen is key for year-round protection.”
