Liam Coen: Jacksonville Jaguars hire Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator as eighth head coach | NFL News

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen as the eighth head coach as owner Shad Khan moves on from Trent Baalke.

Khan surprisingly fired Baalke on Wednesday to clear a path for Coen to land in Jacksonville who initially declined an in-person interview.

Coen instead agreed to a new, three-year contract with Tampa Bay that would have made him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator, although it was contingent on him not taking a second interview with the Jags.

However, Coen never showed up to sign the deal and travelled to Jacksonville to meet with Khan and interim general manager Ethan Waugh.

Khan said earlier this month he wanted a head coach who would bring more creativity to Jacksonville, saying “being unpredictable is I think modern football, and we have to be able to show that on the field.”

“To repeat my message earlier this week, I am deeply committed to building a winner here in Jacksonville,” Khan said in a statement. “I also believe in being judged by action, not words. That’s why I took swift and decisive action this week to hire Liam Coen as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

Coen was the architect of one of Tampa Bay’s most productive offenses in its history in 2024. The Buccaneers ranked third in the NFL in yards (399.6 per game) and fourth in points (29.5).

“Becoming the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars is an opportunity of a lifetime, and one that I am going to run with to instill a championship culture and winning tradition here in Duval,” Coen said.

“This doesn’t happen without the support and opportunities that my family and I have been afforded throughout my career, especially during this past season in Tampa Bay. We thank Todd Bowles for his continued support and the entire Buccaneers organization for the experience and know they will have success ahead.”

When is the Super Bowl?

The Eagles host the Commanders in the NFC Championship Game at 8pm live on Sky Sports NFL this Sunday, followed by the Bills against the Chiefs at Arrowhead from 11.30pm, the winners of both advancing to Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9.

It will be the 11th time the Super Bowl has been hosted in New Orleans, the first time since 2013, and the eighth game to be held at the Caesars Superdome.

Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar will headline the Super Bowl half-time show.
