Christmas week is finally here, and a majority of retailers, grocers and most other stores will be closed in observance of the national holiday.
If you find yourself in a bind this Christmas, you may be wondering if any stores will be open on Christmas Day for last-minute shopping needs — because even though everything essentially shuts down on on the holiday, life goes on.
Whether someone wakes up sick and you need to make a pharmacy run or there’s no milk left for Christmas morning coffee, you may be looking for an open grocery store, pharmacy, or retailer to pick up whatever holiday essential you’re missing.
Below you’ll find a list of stores open on Christmas this year. While a majority of stores are closed to allow employees to enjoy the day with loved ones, there are a handful of places you can go to should you realize you forgot to grab batteries, butter, wrapping paper or whatever else you’re in need of, including convenience stores, some pharmacies and a handful of grocers.

Grocery stores open on Christmas Day 2024
- ACME: Select locations may be open with reduced hours. Most stores will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find local hours here.

- Giant Food: Many stores are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All pharmacies are closed except for Bethesda, Catonsville and Pikesville. Select gas stations will be open (if host store is open) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Giant pickup is closed. Find local hours here.

Pharmacies open on Christmas Day 2024
- CVS: According to a CVS spokesperson, many CVS locations will be open during regular hours on Christmas. That said, “some stores may be closed or have reduced hours.” With that in mind, CVS recommends that people call local stores before visiting or check hours. Find local hours here.
- Walgreens: According to a Walgreens spokesperson, most Walgreens stores will be open on Christmas Day with adjusted operating hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 24-hour Walgreens locations and 24-hour pharmacies will remain open. Find local hours here.
